A Double Dose Of DVD Sales Charts; State Of Play… Eh, But Heroes Flies High

September 15, 2009

Somehow I missed last week’s edition of The-Numbers‘ DVD Sales Chart, but never fear, we’ve got two weeks worth of DVD Sales Charts along with my DVD Sales Notes today.  Take a look:

DVD Sales Notes:

State of Play, the star-studded political thriller with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck that failed to take off at the box office (it earned $37 million) didn’t make a huge splash in its first week on the home market.  Sure, it earned a number one debut with 344,745 units sold, but it was a very slow week for DVD Sales, and its $5.5 million worth of sales was actually third in terms of pure dollars for the week.

-Sci-Fi television on DVD is a hot commodity right now.  Heroes – Season Three had the best total sales this week with about $11.1 million.  Supernatural – The Complete Fourth Season was not far behind with $8.7 million.  Both grosses are solid starts for the DVD sets.  Still, neither of these feats can even touch True Blood: The Complete First Season, which increased by 44.8% and 11.9% over the past two weeks, as the second season drew to a close on TV.   Thus far, the set has sold about 1.49 million copies for a $51.9 million total!  These sci-fi successes bode well for the releases of CW’s Vampire Diaries (which is already a success), and ABC’s FlashForward and V.  As Star Trek proved this Summer, science fiction is in a very profitable place right now.

-TV comedies, however, did not fare so well.  Two And A Half Men – The Complete Sixth Season found $2.4 million, which, in my opinion, is $2.4 million too much.  That show is awfulDesperate Housewives – The Complete Fifth Season sold fewer copies, though it was more expensive, and it grossed $2.9 million.  Comedies are palatable and widely accessible, but they don’t have the fanboys!

Hannah Montana The Movie continues its solid run, and with almost 2 million units sold, it’s raked in a terrific $33.2 million  for Disney thus far.  But then, does this surprise you?

Bring It On: Fight To The Finish sold 254,456 copies for sales of $4.3 million, proving that there is still an audience for these direct-to-DVD spinoffs about cheerleading.  With a few more weeks of solid sales and an inevitable MTV deal down the road, why not keep pumping out these pictures and finding a small profit?

Both charts are below:

Weekend Fix: Audiences Are Obsessed With BeyoncĂ©!

April 27, 2009

Wow, this is late, and I know it seems like that is becoming a trend, but I had 18 pages of writing due today for finals, and that’s kind of been consuming me the past couple of days. Anyway, this post just feels obligatory because its so far after the fact, but here are the weekend actuals, in which BeyoncĂ© crushed everything else in her path, as Obsessed found a fantastic $28.6 million. Honestly, when is this woman not successful? Everything she touches is gold! A lot of that success can probably be attributed to the recession. Audiences are down and depressed, so what better to make them feel better than a girl-on-girl catfight?!

Meanwhile, Fighting‘s debut once again verifies that Terrence Howard is, in fact, box office poison. There were no overwhelmingly huge grosses at the box office this weekend, but there was certainly some solid depth, with the top 6 films all earning $8 million or more in what’s usually a terrible weekend in April! Things are going to get crazy next weekend with the debut of Wolverine! I can’t wait!

Friday Estimates: Beyonce In Obsessed Earns $11 Million On Opening Day!

April 25, 2009

Steve Mason just posted Friday Estimates over at Big Hollywood, and I gotta say, this weekend is so Beyonce! Indeed, even I, who certainly had the highest weekend prediction among analysts of $20 million, undercut Obsessed, which earned a crazy good $11 million on Friday. The Era Of Easy Entertainment is real, people! It should be headed to a $26 million weekend, and an easy first place.

Everything else sort of failed to break out, and there will be lots of films in the $8-11 million range this weekend. Here are Mason’s estimates:
